CXL 3.0 - Compute Express Link™

Compute Express Link™ (CXL™) is an open standard that ensures consistency between the processor and memory, as well as between the processor and other devices, including gas pedals.CXL technology maintains memory consistency between the memory area of the processor and the memory of connected devices, enabling resource sharing for higher performance, reduced software stack complexity and lower overall system cost. This allows users to simply focus on target workloads instead of redundant memory management hardware on gas pedals.

CXL has been designed as an open industry standard interface for high-speed communication, as gas pedals are increasingly used to complement processors to support new applications such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The CXL 3.0 specification builds on previous generations of technologies to increase scalability and optimize system-level flows with advanced switching and backbone network capabilities, efficient peer-to-peer communications, and detailed resource sharing across multiple compute domains.

Key features of CXL 3.0

  • Fabric capabilities

  • Multi-headed and Fabric Attached Devices

  • Enhanced Fabric Management

  • Composable disaggregated infrastructure

  • Better scalability and resource utilization

  • Enhanced memory pooling

  • Multi-level switching

  • New enhanced coherency capabilities

  • Improved software capabilities

  • Based on PCIe 6.0

  • Doubles the bandwidth to 64GTs

  • Zero additional latency compared to CXL 2.0

  • Full backward compatibility with CXL 2.0, CXL 1.1, and CXL 1.0.

  • Infrastructure to be ready in 2025 or 2026

Supermicro CXL 1.0, 1.1 oraz 2.0

  • All current Supermicro platforms dedicated to Intel Xeon 4th Sapphire Rapids and AMD Genoa support CXL 1.1, so currently CXL2.0 devices work as 1.1.
  • Supermicro ASG-1115S-NE316R dedicated platform with NVMe E3.S. drives.
